Tell your senators to confirm civil rights leader Kristen Clarke
Kristen Clarke has been nominated by President Biden to lead the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice. Clarke is a longtime civil rights leader. Since 2015 she has served as the President and Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. Prior to that she led the Civil Rights Bureau in the New York State Attorney General’s office and worked at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
Urge your Senators to support Kristen Clarke’s nomination to lead the Civil Rights Division.
Throughout her career, Kristen Clarke has been a steadfast leader in advancing voting rights, economic justice, and combating extremism. Since her nomination, Clarke has come under attack, including for her decision while leading Harvard’s Black Students Association to invite a speaker who espoused antisemitism. Clarke has since said she erred in her decision.
Clarke’s record over several decades of professional life has shown a commitment to combatting antisemitism and white supremacy, promoting religious freedom, and protecting civil rights. Among her achievements was overseeing a Religious Rights Initiative while at the NY Attorney General’s office, which was a critical tool in enforcing anti-discrimination statutes. And as head of the Lawyers’ Committee, Clarke led a lawsuit against white supremacists who were harassing an African American student leader at American University, while also fighting the proliferation of online antisemitism.
The RAC has worked with Clarke on many shared priorities, including our recent civic engagement campaign to ensure every eligible voter had the ability to cast their vote and have it counted.
Although a hearing on her nomination has yet to be scheduled, the attacks claiming Clarke is an antisemite continue and completely ignore her career of public service dedicated to stopping white supremacy and antisemitism. These attacks are also part of a broader critique that appears to be aimed particularly at nominees of Color. In fact, the rising rates of antisemitism and hate generally are issues of real concern and exactly why Kristen Clarke’s leadership at the Civil Rights Division is so necessary.
Urge your senators to vote to confirm Kristen Clarke to lead the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division.
