The Fire grants are the most significant source of federal support for America's fire service. Ensuring the continued viability and success of these critical programs is a top priority for the NVFC.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program helps fire departments and certain non-fire-based EMS organizations obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles and training. The goal of the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program is to increase the number of trained, "front line" firefighters by helping to hire and retain career firefighters and assist with recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters. The Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) program is a component of AFG and supports projects that enhance the safety of the public and firefighters from fire and related hazards.
The NVFC advocates for sustained funding for AFG, SAFER and FP&S. We also work with Congress and FEMA to ensure that volunteers continue to have access to grant dollars. NVFC representatives provide input into criteria development for the programs and also serve as peer reviewers, ranking grant applications based on merit.
