Mental Health ESEA Conference Letter

2015-10-01 | , National Association of School Psychologists

Last week an action alert was sent to NASP members urging them to write their elected officials to support school-based mental health programs in ESEA. Specifically, NASP is advocating for: the authorization of the Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Program, explicit definition of school psychologist, and investments to help schools and districts identify and support children with trauma history and those at risk for mental illness.

NASP would like to thank our members for sending approximately 8,000 letters!

Today a letter is going out addressed to Chairman Alexander, Ranking Member Murray, Chairman Kline, and Ranking Member Scott that mirrors last week's action alert. It urges them to include in the final conference package several provisions in favor of school-based mental health. This letter is signed by almost 100 national and state organizations that support mental health being highlighted in ESEA.

Furthermore, NASP has just voted to adopt a new position statement and resolution further demonstrating our commitment to expanding access to comprehensive school mental health services and the role of the school psychologist in delivering these services.

Thank you for your advocacy!
