BRIEF: Sunday rallies target Amtrak proposal
April 19--GERMANTOWN -- An Earth Day rally against Amtrak's proposal to block a traditionally accessible stretch of the Hudson River shore takes place at noon Sunday at Ernest R. Lasher Jr. Memorial Park.
The Germantown Waterfront Advisory Committee says it will have a bus shuttle available to take attendees from Palatine Park to the Lasher Park. The shuttle will be free and the first takeoff will be 11:30 a.m. Amtrak wants to install fences and gates designed to block access to miles of shore, organizers say. The railroad has cited safety concerns as its reason.
Sportsmen, first responders, environmental advocates and elected officials will offer their views on the proposal, which is under review by the state Department of State. The village of Castleton-on-Hudson is coordinating with the Germantown committee to hold a rally at the locked gates to their park Sunday also beginning at noon.
