Thank Michigan Senators for Passing SB 247
On March 16, 2021, Senator Curt VanderWall introduced Senate Bill 247, legislation intended to reform the prior authorization process by reducing the red tape physicians are forced to navigate. Prior authorization reform is a top strategic priority for MSMS and an effort we worked with Senator VanderWall on last session, previously taking the form of Senate Bill 612. As you may recall, a deeply flawed version of SB 612 was passed from the Senate on to the House for consideration during the lame duck session. Thankfully, we were successful in stopping the substituted bill from moving any further and the bill ultimately expired.
SB 247 is significantly better than previous versions of the bill. The House is expected to introduce their own version of prior authorization reform sometime in May. On April 29, the Senate unanimously passed SB 247. In coordination with the Health Can’t Wait coalition, MSMS will continue the fight as the bill moves to the House of Representatives. Please write your Senator to thank them for their support of meaningful prior authorization reform for Michigan’s patients and providers.
