Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act needs immediate attention
The bipartisan “Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act” was reintroduced in the Senate. The Senate version joins the previously filed House version H.R. 404.
How we got here: Despite being passed by both the House and Senate by overwhelming, bi-partisan margins, the “Driftnet Modernization Act,” was not signed into law by the last administration.
What you need to know: This leaves the federal waters off the coast of California as the only American waters where drift-gillnets are still legal to use.
Why you should care: More than half of everything caught in these driftnets are discarded as unwanted bycatch. Driftnets target swordfish, and catch more than 70 other species of fish, including sportfish, marine mammals and even endangered sea turtles.
