Tell Lawmakers to Support Civics Education!

Help expand civics education through the Civics Secures Democracy Act!

Take action! Ask your senators and representative in Congress to cosponsor the Civics Secures Democracy Act and support Girl Scouts’ hands-on civics education!

Civic education and civic engagement are centerpieces of Girl Scouts. We strongly support efforts to elevate civic education through legislation.

While Americans’ awareness of their First Amendment rights and the branches of our federal government has increased in recent years, national statistics show that young people continue to need civic education. Recent data shows that only 24% of eighth graders performed at or above proficiency on the National Assessment of Educational Progress civics assessment, and just 15% performed at or above proficiency in U.S. history—a decrease from 18% when the assessment was last conducted only four years earlier.

That’s where Girl Scouts come in! Our mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. A crucial element of that is understanding the systems, laws, and processes that direct our country’s governing bodies. That’s why, last summer, we introduced a new series of K–12 Civics Education badges to bring girls more experiences that deepen their understanding of government, prepare them for a lifetime of civic engagement, and motivate them to be catalysts for the change they want to see.

Girl Scouts’ expert civics programming, service learning projects, and badges empower girls to create positive change in their communities while bringing the values and lessons of democracy to life.

You can help grow the reach of Girl Scouts and other youth civics education programs by asking your senators and representative in Congress to support the Civics Secures Democracy Act (H.R. 1814/S. 879), a bipartisan, bicameral bill that would increase the federal investment in civics education and provide more students with meaningful, hands-on civics learning and community service opportunities.

The Civics Secures Democracy Act will bring needed investments to civics education in schools, nonprofit youth programs, and teacher preparation programs—but only if Members of Congress hear from constituents like you today!
