Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP/C-STEP)

  • STEP and C-STEP has served more than 100,000 students in their histories.
  • More than seven in 10 (70%) of C-STEP students pursue professional degree programs of study in STEM and C-STEP targeted fields; STEP students pass the science and mathematics Regents and receive Regents diplomas at rates higher than the state average.
  • More than 70% of STEP graduates pursue professional degree programs of study in STEM and STEP-targeted fields.

Despite rising demand for workers in technical fields, many students choose not to pursue postsecondary studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. These fields also lack
diversity at both higher education institutions and in the workplace, showing that we are not reaping the full benefits of our talent pool.

Opportunity programs like the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) for high school students address the problem of under-representation of minorities in the professions (medicine, engineering, health, etc). STEP is designed for NYS residents in grades 7 through 12 in school districts with 20% or more enrollment of historically underrepresented students. Where as, the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program for college students helps to engage historically underrepresented and disadvantaged students in STEM fields and the professions (medicine, dentistry, engineering, physical therapy, etc.)
