June 19--Dr. Stephanie Teichmiller, of Decatur, has been named one of five women dentists in the world to be presented with the "Icon of Dentistry Award."

The five will be recognized at the Icons of Dentistry: A Workshop for Women conference June 22 at Ultradent Products Inc. in South Jordan, Utah.

Of the five women chosen for the honor, Teichmiller will receive the "Icon of Mentorship" award for her work with dental students, dental assistants and her mentorship of other women in her community.

The first female dentist in Morgan County, Teichmiller has worked as a general dentist in Decatur for 28 years.

Five years ago, Teichmiller began volunteering at the University of Alabama's Birmingham School of Dentistry every Friday. This earned her an offer from the dental school to serve as a part-time faculty member.

In response to a shortage in dental assistants in the area, Teichmiller implemented the program, "Assist to Succeed Decatur," where she has graduated over 100 dental assistants in the past six years.

She also sponsors a yearly scholarship to a Miss Alabama America contestant pursuing a degree in dentistry or medicine.

Teichmiller also started the program, "Decatur's Mission Takeover," where she, other medical and beauty professionals and a photographer provide a full makeover to one lucky woman in need. The event was a fundraiser for the Community Free Clinic of Decatur-Morgan County.

Teichmiller is married to Dr. Chris Teichmiller, an optometrist, and they have two children.
