Ask Congress to Provide Additional Funding to the IDEA!

Due to the Pandemic, beginning in March of 2020, children with a disability have been facing far more difficult challenges at home and in school due to the necessary restrictions. Recently, the federal government began developing a nationwide plan to return to the level of services children received in a traditional school setting before the Pandemic began. In order to achieve this goal, it is vital Congress provide additional funding now to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Congress has provided additional funding to K-12 education twice during this Pandemic. Both legislative packages provided much needed funding to our schools. However, neither package was specifically targeted to support students with disabilities. Even more concerning: there has been no additional funding made available to early intervention services programs for children in the age range of birth to five years old. Special education in the United States faced a large funding gap before the pandemic began. Absent additional support, we risk a student population dealing with learning loss and more students with under or untreated disabilities, all with fewer resources to address either challenge.

The supplementary education funding we are asking Congress to consider at this time would include an additional $12.5 billion for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

This request includes:

  • $11.3 billion for Part B to help supplement K-12 special education efforts
  • $500 million and $400 million to Part C and Part B Section 619, respectively, to address the serious and growing gaps in early intervention services
  • $300 million should help Part D programs that prepare the special education workforce, support parents and families with training and information, promote the deployment of technology, and the implementation of evidence-based research

Please contact congress today and ask them to provide additional funding to support students under the IDEA!
