Natural disasters have a drastic effect on the food needs of millions of Americans and U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) food and nutrition programs (including school meals) are there to fill the gap. In this blog post, Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services Brandon Lipps reviews the food aid provided through these programs in 2017. Schools in hardest-hit areas in Texas, Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands were temporarily allowed to serve 4.5 million children for free. SNA is offering a more detailed look at the immediate and long-term impact of natural disasters on a school district’s meal program at LAC 2018.
