Never before in modern history has the government shut down when the same party controls the White House and both chambers of Congress. The Senate balked at GOP leadership’s latest stopgap proposal because it merely kicked the can down the road again, leaving key issues unresolved. Those issues range from agreeing on government funding levels and a legislative solution for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) to providing relief for victims of now not-so-recent natural disasters.
“The laundry list of unresolved pressing issues affecting Americans every day is long and growing. This shutdown did not happen overnight. It’s been in the making for months as GOP leadership has time and again failed to allow votes on issues with broad public support,” said NEA President Lily Eskelsen García.”
