DHP: It isn’t the Right Issue, the Right Time, or the Right Model
The MDS has worked closely with the Legislature and MassHealth to expand access to care. Outside groups introduced a mid-level dental practitioner model earlier this legislative session that they claimed would alleviate access issues in rural parts of the state, such as the Berkshires and Cape Cod. Ignoring the unique characteristics of health care in our state, they’ve worked to implement a one size fits all solution. Recognizing the complexity of the issue, compared with the simplistic approach taken by these groups in crafting their legislation, the Joint Committee on Health Care Finance ordered the bill to study for further review. Proponents were not deterred, and the legislation was then attached as an amendment (#479) to the Senate budget, it was passed unanimously by the Senate 39-0. We urge the budget conference committee to remove this outside policy proposal from the final budget.
