BRIEF: Virginia's tax-free weekend starts Friday
Aug. 04--Looking to stock up on school supplies, or perhaps invest in a generator or an Energy Star appliance?
You'll be able to do all three in Virginia without paying sales tax beginning at 12:01 a.m. Friday and ending at 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
This means that shoppers can save money on qualifying school supplies costing $20 or less and shoes and clothing priced at $100 or less per item. Portable generators, chainsaws and other hurricane preparedness items also qualify, as do certain Energy Star and WaterSense items for noncommercial use.
Detailed lists of qualifying items can be found in the 2017 Sales Tax Holiday Guidelines at tax.virginia.gov/virginia-sales-tax-holiday. Retailers can choose to offer other items "tax free" by paying the sales tax themselves during the holiday.
Fredericksburg Parent Family magazine has timed its Back-to-School Expo in the middle of the holiday. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in Spotsylvania Towne Centre, and will feature a Lip Sync Battle, school supply drive and registration for after-school activities. There will also be a number of free activities for children.
