The U.S. government should take advantage of this opportunity to demand that the Turkish government prevent the destruction of this center of Armenian cultural and religious identity in Turkey.
The U.S. government should press Turkish authorities to halt the destruction of Camp Armen, a historic Armenian institution on the outskirts of Istanbul that remains at serious risk of demolition.
Camp Armen, after serving for decades as a youth camp, was illegally seized by the Turkish government during the 1980's from the Gedikpasha Armenian Protestant Church. Over the past several months, after decades of neglect, Turkish officials authorized Camp Armen's outright destruction. Bulldozers and tractors demolished parts of the camp, but local Armenian protesters - who have come under physical assault by extremist groups - have, at least temporarily, succeeded in halting its total destruction.
