Yesterday, Senators Heitkamp and Durbin held a briefing in support of their bill, the Trauma Informed Care for Children and Families Act. During the briefing, Sen. Durbin made the connection between treating childhood trauma and the devastating impact changes to the essential benefits in the AHCA would have on this type of treatment. The senator used the example of two young children, who after witnessing their father kill himself, were successfully treated by a mental health program provided in their school. The program transformed two children who were completely shut down into children that once again participated in school and in life. Under the proposed AHCA, this type of program might not be available to those in need, forcing many to go untreated and lead to further damaging outcomes.
